Wiek Hijmans’ Electric Language [review by Thea Derks]

Today, on 19 June 2018, Thea Derks publishes a favorable review of Wiek Hijmans’ CD Electric Language ‘Hoe Wiek Hijmans de elektrische gitaar solofähig maakt’. She says:

The most coherent pieces on the CD are by Rozalie Hirs and Alison Cameron. In article 6 [waves] Hirs places light-footed melodies against softly howling sinetones. Together the many harmonics, the warm tone colour, and the rising and falling drones create a mysterious, super worldly atmosphere.

Another nice review of Wiek Hijmans’ CD, Volkskrant

Today, on 31 May 2018, Frits van der Waa writes a short, yet raving, review on Wiek Hijmans’ new CD Electric Language in the Dutch national newspaper Volkskrant. He praises Hijmans’ meticulous mastery of tone colour and timbre. Van der Waa also mentions the “intriguing” microtonal melodies in article 6 [waves] by Rozalie Hirs.

Fine review by Siebe Riedstra

Today Wiek Hijmans announced this fine review about his new CD Electric Language on the Dutch webzine Opus Klassiek. Siebe Riedstra remarks, among other things:

Listening to a CD like this one is like a musical journey of discovery, that may produce memorable moments. Such a moment is article 6 [waves] by Rozalie Hirs (1965), who transverses life both as a poet and as a composer. On Ladder 11 with Fie Schouten, performing on the bass clarinet, something similar happened – article 7 kept on chasing down the ear. This is music with a remarkable tendency towards comtemplation that for a change does not lull one into sleep.

Infinity Stairs

160211-Sonic Hedgehog-RozalieHirs-InfinityStairs-article8

On 11 February 2016 at 20:30 at Constellation, Chicago, United States, Sonic Hedgehog plays the program Unexpected Consequences, consisting of works by Dufay, Wiek Hijmans, Erin Gee, Frederick Gifford, Jorrit Dijkstra, and Rozalie Hirs. Unexpected Consequences focuses on the intricacies and multiplicities of chamber music relationships and delves into the realm of what it means to collaborate in modern times. It is a tour de force through the realms of sonic possibilities of the three instruments (bass clarinet, flutes, and electric guitar), an exploration of sounds, ways of interacting, and the unexpected consequences that emerge. This powerhouse ensemble makes its debut appearance in North America with a program highlighting the unexpected synchronicity in music across time and location.

Sonic Hedgehog can be many trios: each different flute (Shanna Gutierrez, Chicago) changes the sound formation of the entire ensemble; same is true for each of the different clarinets (Fie Schouten, NL), including basset horn. The electric guitar (Wiek Hijmans, NL) is not only a guitar, but also an electronic interface, a midi instrument. In that sense the ensemble is also a wind duo with live electronics. Dedicated to uncovering new sound and sound combinations for their instruments, Sonic Hedgehog seeks to present concerts featuring works written expressly for the group as well as those with open form, theatrical elements, and improvisation.

Infinity Stairs

151112-Sonic Hedgehog-RozalieHirs-InfinityStairs-article8

On 12 November 2015 at 20:30 CET the trio Sonic Hedgehog plays their second concert at Café De Ruimte, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Sonic Hedgehog is the result of a collaboration between the Dutch musicians Fie Schouten (bass clarinet) and Wiek Hijmans (electric guitar) and the American flutist Shanna Gutierrez, who were brought together by the Dutch composer Rozalie Hirs for the premiere of her composition Infinity Stairs in 2014. In Rozalie Hirs’ Infinity Stairs three independent solo pieces are joined into a cohesive whole, simultaneously sustaining and abandoning the soloist individuality of the three performers. Fredrick Gifford’s Adage of Spontaneity creates a meta-instrument, which below the calm surface is extremely active in subtly shifting colours.

Erin Gee’s new work for Sonic Hedgehog focuses specifically on the fringe articulations sounds of the mouth during normal vocal production, working with special mouth microphones and cameras that can capture the percussive pops, clicks and air sounds that surround each phoneme that is produced. The program begins and ends with the early Renaissance music of Dufay as a means of accentuating the broad color range of the instruments and the deep-rooted connection with contemporary music. The three polyphonic voices in Dufay’s works allude to the contrapuntal textures and the use of timbres in the other pieces of the program.

Program notes

Curvices (2013) is a digital application, a virtual poetry and sound installation for cell phones, that accompanies you on your walk through the museum park Klankenbos/ Sound Forest in Neerpelt, Belgium. By changing location you codetermine the development of the music and the poetry. Where are you? What do you hear? Is it indigenous birds that are singing in the forest or do you hear birds from Portugal through your cell phone? Is it a siren you hear or is it the wind? By exploring the terrain you probe sounds and words, you make a journey through the forest, around the world, in as many steps as you like.

The forest has been divided into ten zones, virtual spaces, each with their own composition and animation, that have been composed, designed, and programmed, respectively by Hirs, Cox & Grusenmeyer and Yvan Vander Sanden. The soundapp Curvices registers your location through the GPS on your cell phone or tablet. If you enter a new zone, the corresponding composition sounds and the animation becomes visible. If you are between zones, you hear a recognizable interlude full of birds and sparkling overtones.
