Ways of Space (2019), Museum Drachten – exhibition

From 4 February until 30 March 2020 the architectural sound art installation Ways of Space (2019) by Rozalie Hirs (music) and Machiel Spaan (design) is exhibited at Van Doesburg-Rinsemahuis, Museum Drachten, The Netherlands. The exhibition is part of the show Bauhaus and Drachten. The sound installation starts at 15:00 and 16:00 CET on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. In addition, on Friday 21 February 2020 at 14:00 CET Museum Drachten presents a special event in collaboration with the composer and architect: a lecture by Rozalie Hirs and Machiel Spaan on Ways of Space (2019).

Ways of Space (2019) is inspired by the concept of the ‘open floorplan’ developed by Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931) for his own home in Meudon (near Paris, France). With support of STEIM, M3H architecten, Mondriaanfonds, Maison Van Doesburg, Stimuleringsfonds voor de Creatieve Industrie. It is the third collaborative architecture/sound art project by Spaan and Hirs, after Curvices (2013-present), and The Listening House (2017-present).

Open Saturday V – Maison Van Doesburg, Paris, France [invitation]

Dear friends, you are cordially invited to the next Open Saturday V on 7 December 2019 at Maison Van Doesburg, Meudon Hauts-de-Seine (Paris), France.

At 16:00 CET the architectural sound sculpture Ways of Space (2019) by Machiel Spaan and Rozalie Hirs can be explored; the work has been developed in close collaboration during their stay at Maison Van Doesburg. Afterwards you are invited to share a glass of wine with the artists. Due to strikes this weekend our guest-of-honor Cathy Van Eck (*1979) won’t be able to travel from Zürich to Paris; therefore the programme has changed.

Ways of Space (2019), Van Doesburg House, France – tryout

On Saturday 2 November 2019 at 15:00 CET the sound artist Fedde ten Berge (*1983) is a guest artist at the Maison Van Doesburg, Meudon, Paris, France. He presents several of his sound art installations to the public: Klank Experimenteer Station/ KES, Stronk, Egg, Shroom, and Hybride Microphone (see picture below).

At 16:00 CET the architect Machiel Spaan and composer Rozalie Hirs present their new architectural sound sculpture Ways of Space (2019), which they have developed in close collaboration during their artist-in-residence at Maison Van Doesburg, Meudon, France. Ways of Space (2019) is inspired by the concept of the ‘open floorplan’ developed by Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931) for his own residence. Spaan created the spatial arrangement of loudspeakers and Hirs composed new electronic sounds for the musical composition. It is the third collaborative architecture/sound art project by Spaan and Hirs, after Curvices (2013-present), and the Listening House (2017-present). The residency is supported by Mondriaanfonds, Maison Theo Van Doesburg, and Stimuleringsfonds voor de Creatieve Industrie.

Poetry performance, Maison Van Doesburg, Meudon, France

On Saturday 5 October 2019 Jaap Blonk is guest-of-honour at Maison Van Doesburg, Meudon Hauts-de-Seine, France. Blonk performs his own musical and poetic works, as well as poems by I.K. Bonset (pseudonym of Theo Van Doesburg). In addition, Rozalie Hirs performs her poems in Dutch, interlaced with Kim Andringa’s reading of her French translations. The event is closed by Daniel Cunin with the lecture Coups de cœur et coups de foudre selon Theo van Doesburg, interlaced with a reading of his French translations. The entrance is free. The performance language is Dutch or French (Blonk’s performance includes other, also imaginary, languages). Since the space is limited, advance reservation through an e-mail to m.spaan@m3h.nl is advised.

The event is inspired by the DADA poetry salons of Theo and Nelly van Doesburg – van Moorsel with Kurt Schwitters, among others, in the nineteen-twenties.

Salon de poésie avec Kim Andringa, Jaap Blonk, Daniel Cunin, Rozalie Hirs à la Maison Van Doesburg, Meudon, France [invitation]

[Invitation in English] Nous vous invitons cordialement à notre prochaine matinée à la Maison Van Doesburg à Meudon, ‘Open Saturday III – Poetry’, le samedi 5 octobre 2019 à 16h00. Notre invité d’honneur Jaap Blonk performera ses propres oeuvres musicales et poétiques, ainsi que des poèmes de I.K. Bonset (pseudonyme de Theo Van Doesburg). Ensuite, Rozalie Hirs donnera une lecture performative de ses poèmes en néerlandais, en alternance avec Kim Andringa qui lira ses traductions françaises. Artist-in-residence, Van Doesburg House, Paris, France

From 1 September until 31 December 2019 composer Rozalie Hirs and architect Machiel Spaan live and work as artists-in-residence at the Van Doesburg House, Paris, France. During their stay the two create Ways of Space (2019), a new interdisciplinary architectural sound art installation. The residency is made possible through grants from Mondriaanfonds and the Netherlands Performing Arts Fund.

The Van Doesburg House was designed by De Stijl artist and architect Theo Van Doesburg for himself and his wife, the pianist, artist, and curator Nelly van Moorsel. It is an inspiring, transformative building with movable inner walls.
