Atlantis ampersand named as music highlight in Theaterkrant

Ein-tag-und-eine-stunde-in-urbo-kune-©-Janiek-Dam-3-435x300

Wonderful review by Pieter Rings in Theaterkrant:

“The highlight of the music takes place right away in the afternoon: the world premiere of Atlantis ampersand by Rozalie Hirs. The sound of the orchestral instruments passes from soft to loud (crescendo), reinforced by an eight part choir. Then the storm ceases (diminuendo) en silence emerges. The stillness is kept for a moment before the sound grows once again, but with new harmonies and tonalities, to then diminish and die out. Again and again. The succession of sound waves crested with song has a soothing effect, almost hypnotising. When in the next movement several waves tumble over one another this soft undulation remains without ever subsiding.”

Roseherte at November Music 2014

November Music logo

Just received the great news that my composition Roseherte for orchestra and electronic sounds will be played by Philharmonie Zuidnederland during the opening of November Music 2014. It is a great honor to be making a new arrangement for the opening night on 6 November 2014, that will also feature works by Kate Moore and Juan Felipe Waller.

The new instrumentation consists of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns, 2, trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, harp, 2 percussionists, piano, strings (6 first violins, 6 second violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos, 2 double basses), and electronic sounds (1 player). This means that the instrumentation is to be reduced from ninety to forty-two players – not an easy task. I shall be looking forward to analyzing the composition, and to the new arrangement, using all microtones that were originally calculated. In the original score the microtones were omitted from the first movement for reasons of pragmatism (not in the electronics, though, so the absolute non-approximated frequencies are still audibly present). Microtones were only used in the second movement of the score, once the lush spectral harmonic fields make their appearance. Trying to compensate somehow for the smaller number of available voices, I am now going to arrange the first movement microtonally as well, and hope to thus enhance the inner resonance of its harmonic material.

Already working on two other pieces to be premiered in October & November 2014: new pieces for Bozzini Quartet, and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. It is an exciting, as well as a little bit intimidating, year!

James Weeks – String Quartet (to Alberto Caeiro)
Richard Glover – Seventh Inversions
Rozalie Hirs – Zenit

The Bozzini Quartet bring their uncompromising austerity and generous sensitivity to the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival for the fourth time with a programme that explores the outermost bounds of the practice we once called minimalism. Two UK premieres and one world premiere explore uncharted regions of a warmly human, ineffable space of unknown possibilities.

Program notes

Sacro Monte was commissioned by La Nuova Arca, Turin, for the concert series ‘Il Suono dei Parchi’ by the ensemble Antidogma, touring seven natural reserves in Piemonte, northern Italy, in the fall of 1997. Seven composers, hailing from England, Italy, France and the Netherlands, each wrote one piece as a musical reaction to their stay earlier that year in one of these reserves. The reserve that Rozalie Hirs visited was the Sacro Monte di Varallo Sesia, a pilgrimage site on top of a mountain, which includes a path with countless little shrines, inhabited by life-size terracotta statues.

The composition Sacro Monte is a slow and contemplative work, meant to be performed in the basilica on top of the mountain. The ensemble plays long sustained, delicate chords, interspersed with pizzicati in the strings. Piano, glockenspiel and vibraphone occupy a central position with a continuously varying motive that is characterized by large intervallic leaps. Halfway through the piece, the violin takes the initiative with a solo, which is constructed from fast, high figures, as if you are staring at a static mountainous landscape, when suddenly a solitary cyclist passes by.
