Wiek Hijmans’ Electric Language [review by Thea Derks]

Today, on 19 June 2018, Thea Derks publishes a favorable review of Wiek Hijmans’ CD Electric Language ‘Hoe Wiek Hijmans de elektrische gitaar solofähig maakt’. She says:

The most coherent pieces on the CD are by Rozalie Hirs and Alison Cameron. In article 6 [waves] Hirs places light-footed melodies against softly howling sinetones. Together the many harmonics, the warm tone colour, and the rising and falling drones create a mysterious, super worldly atmosphere.

Fine review by Siebe Riedstra

Today Wiek Hijmans announced this fine review about his new CD Electric Language on the Dutch webzine Opus Klassiek. Siebe Riedstra remarks, among other things:

Listening to a CD like this one is like a musical journey of discovery, that may produce memorable moments. Such a moment is article 6 [waves] by Rozalie Hirs (1965), who transverses life both as a poet and as a composer. On Ladder 11 with Fie Schouten, performing on the bass clarinet, something similar happened – article 7 kept on chasing down the ear. This is music with a remarkable tendency towards comtemplation that for a change does not lull one into sleep.

Rehearsal with Wiek Hijmans, Shanna Gutierrez, and Fie Schouten

Here is a photograph of a rehearsal with Fie Schouten, Shanna Gutierrez, and Wiek Hijmans last Wednesday, as we were trying out sketches towards a new trio & two new solo pieces. This set of instruments (flute, bass clarinet, electric guitar) prove to be exquisite and is highly recommended!

The world premiere of article 6 [waves] for electric guitar and electronic sounds (2013) will take place during the Wiek Hijmans’ recital Gevonden werken at Theater Korzo, Den Haag, on 21 September 2013 at 20:30 CET. Welcome!
