Ways of Space (2019) – sound installation by Machiel Spaan and Rozalie Hirs
Ways of Space (2019) is inspired by the concept of the ‘open floorplan’ developed by Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931) for his own home. Spaan created the spatial arrangement of loudspeakers and Hirs composed the electronic music. Next year Ways of Space will be exhibited at several museums in The Netherlands, such as the Bauhaus Exhibition at Museum Drachten, and Van Eesteren Museum, Amsterdam. It is the third collaborative architecture/sound art project by Spaan and Hirs, after Curvices (2013-present), and The Listening House (2017-present). With support of STEIM, M3H architecten, Mondriaanfonds, Maison Van Doesburg, Stimuleringsfonds voor de Creatieve Industrie.
The event is part of the ‘Open Saturday’ series. During their artist-in-residence at Maison Van Doesburg, Machiel Spaan and Rozalie Hirs have initiated and curated the ‘Open Saturday’ series, consisting of five events across the various disciplines related to the work of Theo and Nelly van Doesburg.
