On Sunday 22 March 2020 at 11:30 a new work (poetry, music) for string quartet and soprano is performed by Sonar Quartett and Maraile Lichdi (soprano). The new work by Rozalie Hirs is a commission by Förderkreis für Neue Musik Heilbronn e.V. The location is Regiswindiskirche, Lauffen am Neckar, birthtown of the German poet Hölderlin.

Silent Poetry – OBA anniversary

On Friday 8 February 2019 the Amsterdam public library (Openbare Bibiliotheek Amsterdam aka OBA) celebrates its 100th anniversary with a Silent Poetry programme. On 6 January 2019 20:00 at Tivoli|Vredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands, the Belgian SPECTRA Ensemble, Nora Fischer (soprano), and Filip Rathé (conductor) perform a new work by Rozalie Hirs. The concert is part of the Avontuurlijke Muziek Series.

Dreams of Airs (2017-18) is a cycle of poetry and music by Rozalie Hirs. Its sound world features eight musicians, a singer who speaks, and electronic sounds. The visual artists Boris Tellegen and Geert Jan Mulder designed a live video installation for the performance. The duration of the performance is around 60 minutes. The concert performance is concluded with an interview by Thea Derks, music journalist.

Art and the Evil

On Saturday 23 June 2018 at 16:00 CET the literary magazine De Gids presents its issue Art and the Evil. Maxim Februari, Simone van Saarloos, Arnon Grunberg, Johanna Geels and Bas van Putten contribute essays on the topic. Students of the Amsterdam Conservatoire (Conservatorium van Amsterdam) have composed madrigals, based on brand-new poems on the topic by Martijn Benders, Annemarie Estor, Rozalie Hirs, and Mischa Andriessen. Fiep van Bodegom acts as host of the event. The location is Stadsschouwburg (Rabozaal), Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The afternoon event is part of the Holland Festival and as such connected to Gesualdo: an anarchistic quest for the sublime, a series of concerts performed by Nederlands Kamerkoor and De Warme Winkel that week.

On 13 May 2018 at 20:30 CET ASKO|Schönberg and Etienne Siebens (conductor) perform the new double harp concerto parallel world and sea (2017-18) by Rozalie Hirs during the concert series Obsessions at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands. The harpists Ernestine Stoop and Godelieve Schrama act as soloists during the performance. The concert is preceded by an interview with Rozalie Hirs about her musical obsessions, as well as a reading of her poems.

Multilingualism: Tower of Babel I Diapason

On 15 December 2017 at 20:30 CET the Amsterdam-based experimental poetry venue Perdu presents the first installment of a series of evenings Toren van Babel/ Diapason around the phenomenon of multilingualism in contemporary poetry. The evenings are curated by Lucie Fortuin, Linda Veldman, and Frances Welling (Avondenredactie/ director of Perdu).

During this evening the multilingual poetry book gestammelte werke (2017) by Rozalie Hirs is presented to the Dutch audience. The new book, recently published by the Berlin-based experimental publishing house kookbooks, can be regarded as a manifesto for Europe and the world. Rozalie Hirs, Linda Veldman, and Frances Welling kick off the evening with a language caroussel of poems in Dutch, German, French, English, and Russian, selected from the new compendium. The performance is followed by a round table discussion with Frances Welling (host), Çağlar Köseoğlu, Dean Bowen, and Rozalie Hirs, on the topic of multilingualism in poetry. After the intermission Hirs performs her music composition Bridge of Babel (2009), an imaginary road trip around the world in twenty languages. The program is concluded with a brandnew multilingual radioplay by Lucie Fortuin, Linda Veldman, and Frances Welling.

Poetry performance during Geestdrift Festival

At the invitation of Joost Baars, the poets Edwin Fagel, Willem Jan Otten, and Rozalie Hirs perform alongside him during Geestdrift Festival at Geertekerk, Utrecht, The Netherlands, on 28 October 2017.

Geestdrift is a festival around theological themes with lectures, readings, literature, visual arts, and music. This year’s theme concerns the radical hermeneutics and weak theology of John Caputo, who opens the festival at noon with a keynote lecture entitled ‘In search of a god worthy of the name’. The poetry readings by Joost Baars, Edwin Fagel, Willen Jan Otten, and Rozalie Hirs take place from 15:45-16:45 CET. The photograph on the left shows Dette Glashouwer who presents her theatre show ‘Money money money’ later in the afternoon.

The Geertekerk in Utrecht is one of the oldest churches in the city: its construction began in the 17th Century. It was remodeled during the 19th Century and has been one of the spiritual and cultural centers of eastern Holland ever since. Apart from fulfilling the religious needs of its parishioners, the Geertekerk also hosts musical and cultural performances, and exhibitions.

From 19-23 October 2016 Rozalie Hirs is one of the guest poets at the Frankfurter Buchmesse, Germany, invited by the Netherlands Foundation for Literature. She presents her poetry in Dutch and German and performs her poetry-music hybrids at a few events throughout the week. The Netherlands and Flanders are guests of honour at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2016.

The work of the Flemish painter Hieronymus Bosch, who passed away five hundred years ago, is commemorated by several Dutch and Flemish artists and writers. Here by the Dutch writer Cees Nooteboom with the essay Eine düstere Vorahnung in Neue Zürcher Zeitung on 30 January 2016.

On 9 September 2016 Rozalie Hirs, Heike Fiedler, and Laurence Vielle perform at the Heyzel Planetarium, Brussels, during the Underground Poetry Festival 2016

On Saturday 10 September 2016 at 18:00 CET Rozalie Hirs performs poetry and music hybrids at Alberteum, the Planetarium of Brussels, Belgium. Also Heike Fiedler and Laurence Vielle will be performing their works. After the intermission Angela Rawlings, Maja Jantar, and Vincent Tholomé present the world premiere of a new collaborative project.

All performances are part of the Third Annual Brussels Poetry Fest, Belgium, 9 through 11 September 2016. Heike Fiedler, Laurence Vielle, and Rozalie Hirs are guest poets during the international events, consisting of performances and workshops in collaboration with the UZB hospital and BELvue Museum, Brussels. The Heysel Exhibition Park was especially designed for the Brussels International Exposition (1935) and Expo (1958). The Atomium (1958) and the Planetarium (1935) are well known monuments in Heysel Park.

Portrait concert: Rozalie Hirs – poetry and music

On 24 April 2016 Penhuis Kortrijk and Festival van Vlaanderen Kortrijk present a portrait concert with poetry and music by Rozalie Hirs. Alain Delmotte is the host of the event, consisting of a performance by the Bozzini Quartet of Hirs’ string quartets Zenit (2010) and Nadir (2014), as well as a poetry performance by the composer-poet. The event is curated by Joost Fonteyne and Gie Devos. The location is Schouwburg, Kortrijk, Belgium.

On 20 March 2016 11:00 CET at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the Huygens-Fokker Foundation presents Het woord aan het woord, a programme in which spoken word plays a prominent role, featuring the poets Maria van Daalen, Rozalie Hirs, Lieke Marsman, Han van der Vegt, and Samuel Vriezen. Ere Lievonen plays the 31-tone Fokker organ.

On September 24, 2011, Rozalie Hirs is giving five lectures (at 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00) on, and including, poetry, as part of the event Dichter aan huis (“Poet in the house”) in The Hague. During this event, some fifty poets are performing, each in a different living room in The Hague. Hirs is reading in the workshop of sculptor and stone restaurateur Paul van Laere.

Hirs is reading several poems (cycles) and is talking about some digital word toys: the application Stamboom  (2006) and the interactive website Geluksbrenger online (2011), which have both been developed in collaboration with visual artist Harm van den Dorpel.

From the 14th to the 19th of February of 2011, Rozalie Hirs is guest of the International Poetry Festival in Granada, Nicaragua. Seventy poets hailing from some thirty countries are attending the festival. All poets read at 4 or 5 events in and near Granada.

The photo was made on February 17, 2011, at Plaza de la Independencia, Granada, Nicaragua, during which event Rozalie was reading the poems ‘Stamboom’ (‘Árbol genealógico’) and ‘Tuimelaar’ (‘Delfín mular’). The Spanish translations were made by Diego Puls.

On September 28, 2007, at Perdu, Amsterdam, the new issue of the Belgian literary review DWB (vol. 152 no. 4, September 2007) is presented at Perdu, Amsterdam. The issue contains a special feature titled Jaap en de Bonenstaak (“Jack and the beanstalk”). The night is hosted by Arnoud van Adrichem and Elma van Haren. Astrid Lampe, Pol Hoste and Anneke Brassinga read texts. Miguel Declercq presents a graphic story. Musical compositions on original texts by Samuel Vriezen and Rozalie Hirs are performed by the Jackson Mac Low Band. Rozalie Hirs shows her concept of ‘betekenisritme’ (‘signifying rhythm’) using the typographic rhythms in her poem ‘Vlinders gras’, resulting in the composition Vlinders gras that is performed tonight. She wrote the poem at the request of Arnoud van Adrichem in reaction to the poem ‘Houd jij dit maar uit elkaar?’ by Lucas Hüsgen, part of the same DWB feature.
