Infinity Stairs

160211-Sonic Hedgehog-RozalieHirs-InfinityStairs-article8

On 11 February 2016 at 20:30 at Constellation, Chicago, United States, Sonic Hedgehog plays the program Unexpected Consequences, consisting of works by Dufay, Wiek Hijmans, Erin Gee, Frederick Gifford, Jorrit Dijkstra, and Rozalie Hirs. Unexpected Consequences focuses on the intricacies and multiplicities of chamber music relationships and delves into the realm of what it means to collaborate in modern times. It is a tour de force through the realms of sonic possibilities of the three instruments (bass clarinet, flutes, and electric guitar), an exploration of sounds, ways of interacting, and the unexpected consequences that emerge. This powerhouse ensemble makes its debut appearance in North America with a program highlighting the unexpected synchronicity in music across time and location.

Sonic Hedgehog can be many trios: each different flute (Shanna Gutierrez, Chicago) changes the sound formation of the entire ensemble; same is true for each of the different clarinets (Fie Schouten, NL), including basset horn. The electric guitar (Wiek Hijmans, NL) is not only a guitar, but also an electronic interface, a midi instrument. In that sense the ensemble is also a wind duo with live electronics. Dedicated to uncovering new sound and sound combinations for their instruments, Sonic Hedgehog seeks to present concerts featuring works written expressly for the group as well as those with open form, theatrical elements, and improvisation.

Platonic ID – UK premiere

Edmund Finnis

On Saturday 6 February 2016 the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group/ BCMG and Richard Baker (conductor) perform Parallel Colour, a new composition by Edmund Finnis. The programme, curated by Richard Baker in collaboration with BCMG, also includes the UK premiere of Platonic ID by Rozalie Hirs, as well as works by Vivier, Davies, Harvey, and Donatoni.

“Finnis’ glistening, dancing music has an air of quiet mystery, possessing the elusive quality of being both familiar and strange at once. His first BCMG Sound Investment commission departs from the standard ensemble line-up, with pairs of instruments providing unusual sound combinations. Like Finnis, Hirs writes music of a refreshingly original character. She examines and dissects sounds to a microscopic degree, creating exceptionally captivating ‘sonic spaces’. Her Platonic ID elegantly unfolds in rustling waves of rapid notes, halted by moments of calm in which short, luminous chorales suddenly shine forth.

The expressive intensity of Claude Vivier’s music, together with its compositional skill and innovation, make his oeuvre among the most compelling and distinctive of the late 20th century. Trois Airs pour un opéra imaginaire is his last completed work, and one of his best. Premiered just 17 days following his violent and untimely end in Paris in March 1983, the music inhabits a twilight realm between reality and the imagination, hinting at future directions in which his music might have travelled.”

Amsterdam Sinfonietta (Photo: Marco Borggreve)

On 27 November 2014 Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Candida Thompson (principal player and artistic director) perform a new work by Rozalie Hirs for string orchestra, commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

Hirs’s new work is written in reply to Bartók’s Divertimento. She regards it as an honor to be performed by Amsterdam Sinfonietta alongside her first musical hero. Further compositions in the program are Fugue on the name B.A.C.H. by Robert Schumann and Concerto Funebre by Karl Amadeus Hartmann. The soloist of the evening is violinist Isabelle Faust.

The instrumentation of the new work by Hirs is 6-6-5-4-2 (6 first violins, 6 second violins, 5 violas, 4 cellos, 2 double basses).
