Silenced (2018), Atria, Amsterdam

On 6 December 2018 the soprano Bauwien van der Meer presents her production Fantastic Women, with brandnew songs on the topic of emancipation and women’s rights, at ATRIA, the Amsterdam Institute on Gender Equality and Women’s History.

Fantastic Women contains musical works by the composers Aleksandra Bajde, Rozalie Hirs, Anda Kryeziu, Kate Moore, Georgia Nicolaou, Barbara Okma, Annelies Van Parys, Calliope Tsoupaki, Renske Vrolijk, Yiran Zhao, based on poetry by, among others, Hirs, Plath, and Wesendonck. The new work composed by Hirs for the project is entitled Silenced (2018).

The production is developed in collaboration with Jorinde Keesmaat (director), Desiree van Gelderen (light), Sammy Van den Heuvel (costumes, set design), and Robin de Bruijn (dramaturgy). The new works are commissioned by November Music, Den Bosch, The Netherlands. With financial support from the Netherlands Performing Arts Fund and the Eduard van Beinum Foundation.

Dreams of Airs (2017-18), November Music – world premiere

On Saturday 10 November 2018 at 19:00 CET the Belgian SPECTRA Ensemble, Nora Fischer (soprano), and Filip Rathé (conductor) perform the world premiere of Dreams of Airs (2017-18) by Rozalie Hirs during the contemporary music festival November Music, Den Bosch, The Netherlands.

Dreams of Airs (2017-18) is a cycle of poetry and music by Rozalie Hirs. Its sound world features eight musicians, a singer who speaks, and electronic sounds. The visual artists Boris Tellegen and Geert Jan Mulder designed a live video installation for the performance. The duration of the performance is around 60 minutes.

Thanks to the Netherlands Performing Arts Fund and the Stimuleringsfonds Creative Industry for financial support. Thanks to MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and Maison Dora Maar for their generous and indispensable residencies and fellowships. On 20 July 2018 the German (forte)pianist J. Marc Reichow plays Meditations for piano and electronic sounds (2017) by Rozalie Hirs during Musik der Jahrhunderte: Der Sommer in Stuttgart. The Festival is a collaboration between Akademie Schloss Solitude, Ensemble ascolta, Musik der Jahrhunderte, Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, and Stuttgarter Kammerorchester; it takes place at different venues in the city of Stuttgart from 19-22 July 2018. On 14 July 2018 from 16:25 until 17:30 Rozalie Hirs is a guest at Matinee Cafe, NTR Radio 4 (Dutch National Radio). Hans Haffmans interviews Hirs on her music and poetry. Haffmans and Hirs also speak about musical ideas, influences, inspirations, as well as the new work for Musikfabrik, a commission by Zaterdagmatinee, to be premiered on 18 May 2019. Art and the Evil

On Saturday 23 June 2018 at 16:00 CET the literary magazine De Gids presents its issue Art and the Evil. Maxim Februari, Simone van Saarloos, Arnon Grunberg, Johanna Geels and Bas van Putten contribute essays on the topic. Students of the Amsterdam Conservatoire (Conservatorium van Amsterdam) have composed madrigals, based on brand-new poems on the topic by Martijn Benders, Annemarie Estor, Rozalie Hirs, and Mischa Andriessen. Fiep van Bodegom acts as host of the event. The location is Stadsschouwburg (Rabozaal), Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The afternoon event is part of the Holland Festival and as such connected to Gesualdo: an anarchistic quest for the sublime, a series of concerts performed by Nederlands Kamerkoor and De Warme Winkel that week.

On 13 May 2018 at 20:30 CET ASKO|Schönberg and Etienne Siebens (conductor) perform the new double harp concerto parallel world and sea (2017-18) by Rozalie Hirs during the concert series Obsessions at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands. The harpists Ernestine Stoop and Godelieve Schrama act as soloists during the performance. The concert is preceded by an interview with Rozalie Hirs about her musical obsessions, as well as a reading of her poems.

parallel sea [to the lighthouse] (2018), commissioned by ASKO|Schönberg with support of the Dutch Performing Arts Fund, is scored for flute, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, 2 harps, 2 percussionists, electronic sounds, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.

On 15 April 2018 at 20:15 CET DoelenKwartet plays Hirs’ first string quartet Zenit (2010) during the program Van buiten naar binnen. The concert is part of the Red Sofa Series at Juriaansezaal, De Doelen, Rotterdam. The concert also features works by Caroline Berkenbosch, Maxim Shalygin, and Willem Jeths. On 22 March 2018 at 18:00 the three current artists-in-residence at Maison Dora Maar, Liz Brown, David Grand, and Rozalie Hirs, present their work to the public. With special thanks to Gwen Strauss, director of Maison Dora Maar.

Liz Brown talks about and reads from Twilight Man: The Strange Life and Times of Harrison Post, to be published by Viking. David Grand speaks about and reads from his fourth novel. Rozalie Hirs speaks about the compositional ideas underlying her new work parallel world and sea to be premiered by ASKO|Schönberg in May 2018. The presentations and subsequent rounds of questions are to be followed by a reception.

Launch of new Forum, Amsterdam

On 11 March 2018 at 14:00 CET a new series of the magazine for architecture FORUM, published by Genootschap Architectura et Amicitiae (founded 1855), present its first issue ‘The Hall’.

The launch party takes place at the Academy for Architecture, Amsterdam; it features a lecture by Machiel Spaan, musical performances by Klaske Oenema, and a round table discussion with Pieter van Hoexem, Haiko Meijer, Juliette Gilson, and Elsbeth Ronner. The afternoon is closed by a reception.

FORUM #1 ‘The Hall’ contains articles and photographs by Machiel Spaan, Madeleine Maaskant, Elsbeth Ronner, Luuk Kramer, Bart de Baets, Sandra Kassenaar, and many others, as well as poems by Rodaan Al Galidi and Rozalie Hirs.

Composer-in-Residence at Maison Dora Maar, Ménerbes, France

From 1 to 31 March 2018 Rozalie Hirs is composer-in-residence of the Maison Dora Maar in Ménerbes, Provence, France. With generous support of a Brown Foundation Fellowship from the Maison Dora Maar.

The French photgorapher, painter, poet Dora Maar (pseudonym for Henriette Theodora Markovitch) owned the house and stayed there every summer from 1944 until 1996 (photograph: Lee Miller).

Meditations (2017) – UK premiere

On Wednesday 21 February 2018 the British pianist Philip Thomas and the Canadian percussionist, composer, and electronic musician Colin Frank play the opening concert of the Electric Spring Festival at the University of Huddersfield, UK. During this program Philip Thomas also presents the UK premiere of Meditations for piano and electronic sounds (2017) by Rozalie Hirs.

The Electric Spring Festival, hosted by the University of Huddersfield, is a five-day electronic sonic exploration.

Luisterhuis (2017; The Listening House), Doetinchem

From 19 January until 19 March 2018 Het Luisterhuis (2017; The Listening House), the architectural interactive sound sculpture by Machiel Spaan/M3H architecten (concept, design) and Rozalie Hirs (music), is exhibited at the Openbaar Vervoer & Speelgoed Museum, Doetinchem, The Netherlands, as part of The Dolls’ House Project, initiated and curated by the architect Peter Masselink. Mark Boumans, the major of Doetinchem, officially opens the exhibition on 19 January 2018 at 12:00 CET. Subsequently it is open to the public from Tuesday through Saturday (12:00-17:00) and on Sunday (13:00-17:00). The museum is closed on Mondays.
