Lichtende Drift (2014) – world premiere

On 27 November 2014 Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Candida Thompson (principal player and artistic director) perform a new work by Rozalie Hirs for string orchestra, commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

In her youth Rozalie developed an early affection for the works by Béla Bartók, starting with the works for piano solo, soon to be followed by the works for strings: his string quartets, duos for two violins, violin concertos, Divertimento for strings, and Music for Strings, Celesta and Percussion.

Hirs’s new work is written in reply to Bartók’s Divertimento. She regards it as an honor to be performed by Amsterdam Sinfonietta alongside her first musical hero. Further compositions in the program are Fugue on the name B.A.C.H. by Robert Schumann and Concerto Funebre by Karl Amadeus Hartmann. The soloist of the evening is violinist Isabelle Faust.

The instrumentation of the new work by Hirs is 6-6-5-4-2 (6 first violins, 6 second violins, 5 violas, 4 cellos, 2 double basses).

On 26 November 2014 at 20:00 CET Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Candida Thompson (principal player and artistic director) perform the try-out of a new work by Rozalie Hirs for string orchestra, commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Furthermore Rob van Steen interviews Rozalie about her compositional ideas, and the new work.

Curvices Den Bosch music and poetry app – opening

Rozalie Hirs: Curvices music and poetry app (track: Proofs of Love)

From 7 November 2014 onwards the Curvices music and poetry app is a permanent virtual installation at De Citadel in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. The app is available as a free download for iOS (iPhone and iPad) or Android (all other phones and tablets) or through scanning the OR code below. The site is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00-17:00. The app is loation specific and only works when present on the grounds of De Citadel in Den Bosch, The Netherlands.

Curvices (2013) is a digital application, a virtual poetry and sound installation for mobile devices, based on the poetry book Curvices and Musicles by Rozalie Hirs (music, poetry, voice), Cox & Grusenmeyer (design, animations), Yvan Vander Sanden (software design, realisation), and Machiel Spaan (spatial design).

Adapted for De Citadel, Den Bosch, The Netherlands, at the kind invitation by November Music, 2014. Commissioned by Klankenbos / Musica, Neerpelt, Belgium, 2013. With financial support from a Composition Stipend 2012-2013 from Fonds Podiumkunsten.

Roseherte – world premiere of the new version for orchestra

November Music: Perfromance of 'Roseherte' by Rozalie Hirs at opening concert, 6 November 2014During the opening concert of November Music 2014 on Thursday 6 November 2014 Roseherte (2008) by Rozalie Hirs will be performed by Philharmonie Zuidnederland.
In its original version this work is scored for a ninety-piece symphony orchestra & electronic sounds. On 6 November 2014 a brandnew version for forty-two piece orchestra & electronic sounds will be played. The new instrumentation is 2222.2221.arp.2perc.pf.66442 & electronic sounds. Shanna Gutierrez (flute) plays the world premiere of article 8 [infinity] (2014) by Rozalie HirsOn 12 September 2014, at the event New Adventures in Performance during the Gaudeamus Music Week, Pete Harden (guitar), Susanna Borsch (recorder), and Cherish Menzo (dance) present and add to the neon elk a pinch of tarragon by Marina Poleukhina (RU 1989), who is nominated for the Gaudeamus Prize 2014.

The concert starts off with a performance by Shanna Gutierrez (flute, bass flute), who presents Sur les débris for bass flute and electronics (2013) by Francisco Castillo Trigueros (MX 1983), nominated for the Gaudeamus Prize 2014, as well as the world premiere of article 8 [infinity] (2014) for flute and electronic sounds by Rozalie Hirs, who was chairman of the jury of the Gaudeamus Prize in 2011.

Louis Andriessen and Mariss Jansons during the rehearsal of 'Mysteriën'On 9 April 2014 is the offical first screening of Imperfect harmony, the new documentary by Carmen Cobos about the music composition Mysteriën by Louis Andriessen, at Lantaren/Venster, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Curvices (2013): an interactive poetry and sound app for mobile devices.  Rozalie Hirs (music, poetry, voice). Commissioned by Sound Forest/ Musica, Neerpelt, Belgium. With support of a Composition Stipend 2012-13 of Performing Arts Funds, The Netherlands.The open-air museum Sound Forest (Klankenbos) recently has added a new work to its permanent collection: Curvices (2013) by Rozalie Hirs (music, poetry), Cox & Grusenmeyer (design, animation), Yvan Vander Sanden (software design, realisation), and Machiel Spaan (spatial design) is an application for mobile devices (smartphones, iPads, tablets), combining music, poetry, and animations. Your walk through the forest determines in which way you perceive the work.

On 6 April 2014, the first Sunday of the month, there is an opportunity to discover the work during Sound Forrest Extra. At this event between 13:00 and 16hrs CET you can rent a tablet for €3 to set out on your sound walk.

For whom prefers a guided tour, there is chance to follow a guide through the forest either at 13:30 or 15:30 hrs. The guide opens up your ears and eyes towards a new perception of the works that are part of Sound Forest (Klankenbos).

Fie Schouten: article 7 [seven ways to climb a mountain] (2012) by Rozalie Hirs

On 16 February 2014 Fie Schouten presents the German premiere of article 7 (2012) by Rozalie Hirs. Furthermore she gives a lecture on the use of electronic sounds in this music composition. The performance lecture is part of Bassklarinetten-Konferenz held between 14-16 February 2014 at Grassi Museum, Leipzig, Germany.

Ein ganzes Wochenende lang dreht sich in Leipzig alles um die Bassklarinette: Erstmals in Deutschland findet im Grassi-Museum in Kooperation mit der deutschen Klarinetten-Gesellschaft eine Konferenz statt, die sich der Bassklarinette widmet. Das Instrument wird in Vorträgen von Historikern, Instrumentenbauern und Bassklarinettisten in vielfältiger Weise betrachtet; Schwerpunkt wird die Situation in Deutschland sein. Namhafte Interpreten präsentieren in stilistisch vielseitigen Konzerten die gesamte Bandbreite des Instruments.

Lage Landen serie (Lowlands series), Ooteoote, 2014

On 1 January 2012 Rozalie Hirs initiated the Lage Landen serie (Lowlands series) of new, previously unpublished poems by Dutch and Flemish poets, of which she has remained curator.
