New work for Sonar Quartett

On Sunday 22 March 2020 at 11:30 a new work (poetry, music) for string quartet and soprano is performed by Sonar Quartett and Maraile Lichdi (soprano). The new work by Rozalie Hirs is a commission by Förderkreis für Neue Musik Heilbronn e.V. The location is Regiswindiskirche, Lauffen am Neckar, birthtown of the German poet Hölderlin.

Artist-in-residence at Van Doesburg House, Paris, France

From 1 September until 31 December 2019 composer Rozalie Hirs and architect Machiel Spaan live and work as artists-in-residence at the Van Doesburg House, Paris, France. During their stay the two create a new interdisciplinary sound architecture project together. The residency is made possible through grants from Mondriaanfonds and the Netherlands Performing Arts Fund.

The Van Doesburg House was designed by De Stijl artist and architect Theo Van Doesburg for himself and his wife, the pianist, artist, and curator Nelly van Moorsel. It is an inspiring, transformative building with movable inner walls.

Marché de la Poesie

From 8 until 9 June 2019 Rozalie Hirs is a guest poet at the 37th Marché de la Poesie, Paris, France, and as such one of the official delegates of the Netherlands Foundation for Literature. She performs during the evening programme on Saturday 8 June 2019 at 18:30 CET and is interviewed by Margot Dijkgraaf the following afternoon, on Sunday 9 June 2019, at 15:30 CET. The location is Scène du Marché, Place Saint-Sulpice, in front of Église Saint-Sulpice, Paris, France.

Hirs’ poems have been translated into French by Kim Andringa, Daniel Cunin, and Henri Deluy. The poems are selections from her three latest books Geluksbrenger (2008), gestamelde werken (2012), and verdere bijzonderheden (2017), published by Uitgeverij Querido|Singeluitgeverijen.

Silenced (2018), Vredenburg, Utrecht

On 7 June 2019 the soprano Bauwien van der Meer presents her production Fantastic Women, with songs on the topic of emancipation and women’s rights, at Club Nine, TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Fantastic Women contains musical works by the composers Aleksandra Bajde, Rozalie Hirs, Anda Kryeziu, Kate Moore, Georgia Nicolaou, Barbara Okma, Annelies Van Parys, Calliope Tsoupaki, Renske Vrolijk, Yiran Zhao, based on poetry by, among others, Hirs, Plath, and Wesendonck. The work (music, text) composed by Hirs for the project is entitled Silenced (2018).

The production is developed in collaboration with Jorinde Keesmaat (director), Desiree van Gelderen (light), Sammy Van den Heuvel (costumes, set design), and Robin de Bruijn (dramaturgy). The new works are commissioned by November Music, Den Bosch, The Netherlands. With financial support from the Netherlands Performing Arts Fund and the Eduard van Beinum Foundation.

lightclouds (2019) – German premiere

On 20 May 2019 at 20:00 CET Ensemble Musikfabrik presents the German premiere of lightclouds (2019), a new work for “super brass” quartet, ensemble, and electronic sounds by Rozalie Hirs, during the Konzertreihe Musikfabrik im WDR. The new work is a commission by Stichting Omroep Muziek/ NTR Zaterdagmatinee, The Netherlands, with financial support of the Netherlands Performing Arts Fund. The location of the concert is WDR Funkhaus Wallrafplatz (Großer Sendesaal), Cologne, Germany. The concert programme also features works by Ter Schiphorst, Chin, Bauckholt, and Germanus. The concert is preceded with a Publikumsgespräch (pre-concert talk) by two musicians of the ensemble with Rozalie Hirs and Sander Germanus; the talk starts at 19:15 CET.

Performers include the “super brass” players Marco Blaauw (trumpet), Christine Chapman (horn), Bruce Collings (trombone), Melvyn Poore (tuba), as well as Helen Bledsoe (flute), Carl Rosman (clarinet), Peter Veale (oboe), Alban Wesly (bassoon), Benjamin Kobler, Ulrich Löffler (keyboard), Dirk Rothbrust (percussion), Juditha Haeberlin (violin), Hannah Weirich (violin), Axel Porath (viola), Dirk Wietheger (violoncello). On 27 April 2019 at 12:00 (noon) Rozalie Hirs is presenting a poetry peformance lecture at the Public Library in San Francisco, California, United States. The event takes place during the National Poetry Month. Rozalie talks about intermedial aspects of her poetry and music, followed by a poetry reading and performance of poetry/music hybrids. The event last about an hour.

World Poetry Festival, Montevideo, Uruguay

From 2 until 7 April 2019 Rozalie Hirs is a guest poet at the World Poetry Festival/ Mundial Poético de Montevideo, Uruguay. During the festival Hirs and other international poets from France, Spain, Brasil, Perú, Haiti, Argentina, perform in different cities around Uruguay. In addition the new Spanish poetry book by Hirs ahora es una rosa (Montevideo: Yauguru Books, 2019; Spanish translations by Diego Puls) will be presented.
